ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION

Laser Ablation is the modern technique used to remove varicose veins. Laser energy is used to heat the vein in order to destroy it. A catheter (fine tube) is inserted through the skin near the knee and then threaded up the diseased vein. The catheter is attached to a laser that heats it up. The heat seals the walls of the veins so that no blood can flow through it. The vein then shrivels up and disappears after being broken down by the bodies healing process. The main advantages of Laser Ablation is that after the procedure, patients experience very little discomfort and bruising compared to surgery. Studies have also shown that endovenous laser ablation is the most effective treatment for long term results.

Laser ablation can also be used very effectively for treat veins which have come back after previous stripping operations.

Endovenous laser ablation is now the recommended procedure for the treatment of varicose veins by International Vascular Societies and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) UK.

SCLEROTHERAPY

During sclerotherapy a solution is injected into your varicose or spider veins. This causes the vein to seal off from the other veins in your leg. The vein closes down over time and is eventually absorbed into your body.

Deeper veins can be injected using ultrasound guidance. For spider veins and other small veins closer to the skin's surface, ultrasound guidance is usually not necessary.  A typical treatment session may last for 15 to 20 minutes and will consist of microinjections using ultrafine needles.

THE CONSULTATION PROCESS

During your Consultation with medical condition will be discussed and a physical examination will be carried out (for your comfort loose fitting clothes are advised).

In addition, a Duplex Ultrasound of your lower limb venous system will be carried out to identify any abnormalities in the veins and plan treatment.  The options will be discussed and any procedure required booked on the next suitable slot in the procedure room or theatre.
